The 70’s was an “okay” night for the girls without anyone really standing out.
1. Carly Smithson – Crazy on You (Heart, 1976)
Clearly, the best vocals from the horde and definitely tonight’s best. My only complaint is that I think her high notes are kind of thin and strained. She was even panting after it. Still, Carly’s my bet on the girls.
2. Syesha Mercado – Me and Mr. Jones (originally Me and Mrs. Jones by Billy Paul, 1972)
I love Syesha’s take on this song. I think it was a great delivery despite it not showing off her skills. But come on, she did belted her butt out last week already so I think she’s earned it to go slow this week and be sultry and classy.
3. Ramiele Malubay – Don’t Leave Me This Way (Thelma Houston, 1977)
I actually loved Ramiele’s song choice tonight because it did play up to her strength which is her spot-on big vocals. I think the song’s tendency to go slow and then upbeat was perfect for her.
4. Brooke White – You’re So Vain (Carly Simon, 1972)
I loved Brooke’s vocals tonight. I think it was very beautiful and akin to something that I might hear from an adult contemporary radio station. I’m loving this girl by the week.
5. Kady Malloy – Magic Man (Heart, 1976)
I love this girl! She’s the funnest thing that ever happened on the American Idol semis. I love the opera portion of her pre-perf video and the “Thank you, Ryan” a la Britney brought me to a very long laughter fit. She also belted out the chorus tonight. The verse wasn’t quite good though and the judges were right about her not being able to establish her own artist on the show. Still, I want to see more of this girl. Save her, America, save her!
6. Alaina Whitaker – Hopelessly Devoted to You (Olivia Newton-John, 1978)
Simon was right about Alaina being the competition’s dark horse. She’s quite good vocally and has been consistent on delivering good performances in the past two weeks. However, her uninteresting pre-perf video just showed why she isn’t a crowd favorite.
7. Amanda Overmyer – Carry On Wayward Son (Kansas, 1976)
Although I respect her style and all, Amanda’s look tonight, at least for me, was a major fashion faux pas. She’s still vocally good and competitive though. The song just didn’t make her shine; the verse wasn’t that good but the chorus was fine.
8. Asia’h Epperson – All By Myself (Eric Carmen, 1975)
This is the Idol make or break song. Unfortunately for Asia’h, it was the latter. She just didn’t had enough to really make it and make me wow. The ending was good but over-all, I think it just showed how vulnerable she was.
9. Kristy Lee Cook – You’re No Good (Linda Ronstadt, 1974)
Kristy has a decent country tone to her voice. Still, her performances make me pray hard for America to save her only so we could see her one more week.
10. Alexandrea Lushington – If You Leave Me Now (Chicago, 1976)
Firstly, I’m not a fan. The song was good but I find it odd that Alexandrea uses falsetto on her high notes. I think she could’ve done better.
Like the boys, I think no one from the girls did really bad. I just think they’re somewhat hindered from shining by the stupid themes early in the semis. It cranks up the competition, yes, but we’re in dire longing for better performances.
